In biotechnology research, extensive analysis is conducted on key findings of market research initiatives done for major biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and healthcare organizations, and reported to management. Biotechnology research professionals should have knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within their particular field. They usually rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Most biotechnology research professionals work under immediate supervision and typically report to a supervisor or manager. They are required to focus their broad technical laboratory skills on evaluation, optimization, and implementation of new technologies/platforms that improve the overall efficiency and accuracy of biotechnology applications (e.g., arrays, diagnostics, sensors, assays, drug discovery). The most popular job titles in biotechnology research are that of: research associate: responsible for research and development in collaboration with others on projects; research assistant; laboratory assistant: responsible for performing a wide variety of research laboratory tasks and experiments, making detailed observations, analyzing data, and interpreting results. Also maintains laboratory equipment and inventory levels for laboratory supplies; plant breeder: responsible for the design, development, execution, and implementation of plant breeding research projects in collaboration with a larger research team; and glasswasher: responsible for washing and drying glassware and distributing it to appropriate locations within the laboratories.
