Cost of a computer
August 4, 2010 on 3:45 am | By admin | In Reference and Education | Comments OffWhen most people think about the cost of a computer, they overlook the most expensive part. The true cost of the computer isn’t hardware. The software, warranties, and maintenance often are bigger components of the price than the physical hardware. A lot of computer manufacturers know this so to entice you to buy a new computer they show you the actual hardware cost and then make you pay extra for the operating system and warranty.
It’s actually pretty amazing that hardware costs are going down so rapidly. It’s also strange that software costs still seem high. Perhaps we’re much better at making hardware that we are at software. However it would seem that one software is written to duplication cost is practically zero. That’s not the case with hardware. While you can drive the price down with efficient factories, you still have to make it. It isn’t just a matter of copying bits to a CD area
